A member asked:

Is calcium in multivitamins safe for women to take? i've heard that calcium shouldn't be taken by anyone. thank you.

Generally yes: Calcium is a normal component of the bone & necessary for human metabolism on a cell level. The body has a complex system that will take what it needs out of any consumed in the diet or added as a supplement while leaving behind any excess to be expelled from the body. Some calcium supplements are fine for most people. Where/why you heard it was bad to do so is quite bizarre.

Yes, but....: Unless you have a severely restricted diet, pregnant or have a chronic disease, you do not need extra calcium and multivitamins. If you have a proven vitamin deficiency, then take that one. Otherwise, multivitamins are usually safe and not effective. If you want to help your health, save your money and buy a gym membership. Exercise has proven health benefit.
