How probable is it for me to develop glaucoma?

Depends: Glaucoma has some inherited underpinnings, so is this in your family? Glaucoma can occur in relationship to trauma and some eye diseases. But most cases occur randomly in those with risk. The overall incidence of glaucoma is 1-2% and increases with age. Your likelihood is probably low but measurement of the internal eye pressure, is easily done during an ophthalmologists exam.

Prevalence: The prevalence of glaucoma depends on race, age, gender, certain disease states, genetics. For Blacks its about 3.4% compared to 1.9% for whites. Hispanics are about 1.5%. The prevalence increases with aging, female gender. Family history that is positive for the disease as well as increasing intraocular pressure that is determined to be unhealthy for the optic nerve are other contributors.
