A 18-year-old male asked:

Stomach is tender below the center of my rib cage but above belly button. hurts when something touches it or pushes down on it.i got a blood test done for amylase and lipase. liver function came back normal. ultrasound came normal. what could it be?

Doctor can recheck: A person with tummy pain between the belly button and the bottom of the rib cage can have a variety of problems. A doctor's examination is needed, unless the person is young and healthy, and pain is mild and resolves quickly. Possible causes include: stomach acid reflux or ulcer symptoms, pancreatitis, liver or gallstone problems, abdominal muscle strains, some sort of hernia, stomach flu, etc...

Gastritis : Gastritis (often caused by stress, but also by medications like corticosteroids and NSAIDS (Motrin, Aleve, etc.) or aspirin. Also, Helicobacter Pylori is a bacteria that can cause it. Look for black, tar-like stools and signs of anemia like dizziness when going from lying down to standing up; shortness of breath on exertion, pale skin and mucous membranes, means signif. bleeding.
