Stay at home, test: Stay at home for 14 days after the contact. Monitor for fever, dry cough, shortness of breath. Arrange testing by contacting your medical center or physician. Drink fluids, rest and self isolate. You may have developed a mild case of COVID-19. Most individuals recover with time and symptomatic treatment.

Policy South Africa?: Your question is fielded from Dr.’s in a variety of areas – mostly the US. I don’t know specific info on COVID 19 management in South Africa. I refer you to a site recommended by the South African National Department of Health (NDoH). By typing in Hi plus 123456 on WhatsApp it will connect you to Corona Virus Connect that has WHO general information & which may be more pertinent to your location.

Yes: Yes it is a good idea. sometimes Covid 19 and flu (and other common cold virus) could share similar symptoms.

Not necessary: That would be an overreaction to the novel coronavirus (nCoV). Look for guidannce from your local public health department or California Dept of Health. You can rely on their advice.

Do we have any hospital that can test a person for the COV-19?

Sure: Tests are only for suspected COVID-19 patients and their contacts. Three months into the global outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control says state labs will now be able to run tests. Until now, only the main CDC lab was running tests in the US. Any hospital with an ER or intensive care unit should be able to collect the samples (nose swab, sputum, and blood) and send it to the state or CDC.

Limit travel: Travel to most affected countries, China, Italy, South Korea and Iran should be cancelled. Everything else should be cautiously weighed as local regulations may affect activities. Consider being quarantined for at least 2 weeks if the area where living has many cases. (3/7/20)
A member asked:

Why do I keep seeing the word fomite everywhere? What exactly does a fomite mean in terms of Covid-19?

Dr. Luis Fernando Mesta Carrillo

COVID-19 "spreader": A fomite is any unanimated object that have been contaminated by the virus and can carry and spread it when touched by other people. This could be any surface, like glass, metal, wood or cloth that have been in contact with fluids, like very small saliva drops from other people. That is the reason why all the people must avoid touching their face, mouth, eyes and nose without wash their hands.
