Scalp pain: Occipital neuralgia doesn't usually cause discomfort on the side of the scalp. Has your scalp shown any rash, pustules or other lesions to suggest infection of hair follicles, shingles, psoriasis? I recommend a reevaluation of your symptoms by your physician or dermatologist.

Hold off: Typically the shot for occipital neuralgia is a steroid and that can take a few days to kick in. Other problems that can cause pain are typically noticeable like lipoma or tinea cavities. One possibility would be a vasculitis though. Give shot another day or two, but if not effective let your doctor know.
