When should i go to the er when i have lower back pain?

Back pain: Not all back pain needs to be evaluated in the ER. If you are experiencing a sudden onset of lower extremity weakness, numbness in seat (saddle) area, sudden bowel or bladder dysfunction of bladder (urinary retention or sudden incontinence) and bowel (sudden bowel incontinence), then it would be concerning for Cauda- equina syndrome and urgent medical attention would be advised.
