A member asked:

I was diagnosed with a hietal hernia years ago, and i have been on a variety of proton pump inhibitors since. what is the correlation between use of these meds, magnesium deficit, and irregular bowel movements? use of proton pump inhibitors and magnesium

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hypomagnesemia?: Some Proton pump inhibitors appear to reduce intestinal absorption of Mg, thus possibly lowering blood level of Mg. Normal Mg levels are necessary to maintain the electromagnetic regulatory processes of our nerves and muscles without which we can encounter increased irritability, nervousness, high blood pressure, heat rhythm problems, disturbed bowel movements etc. For tx, take Mg supplement
