A member asked:

5 year old with bad diarrhea. doctor says gastro. day 3 today and she is in lots of pain. going to the bathroom around 30 times a day. using antibiotic since yesterday and pectrolyte. eating and drinking very small amounts?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Keep hydrated : In cases of infectious diarrhea (gastro) drinking is most important (food can wait). Small amounts often over long periods of time are better than large amounts all at once. For a 5 year old weighing 16-20 Kg, you should give 2-3 tablespoons (45 mL) of electrolyte solution (such as pectrolyte) every 5-10 minutes with the goal of giving 1.5 L over 4 hours. If diarrhea worsens seek medical attentio
