A member asked:

Ive had some red in the toilet recently i do eat a lot of beets and red foods no pain when i poop and not pencil thin im worried its something more. do these stool tests for cancer you buy at drugstores work? would like peace of mind?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

For detecting blood: The over-the-counter stool blood tests are similar or the same as ones used in doctor's offices. A person in her 50's needs to be seen by here primary care doctor for a check-up and screening for diseases, including but not just cancers. It is ok for the patient to do an OTC stool test, but she still needs to see her doctor for preventive care every 2-3 years.
