Many possibilities: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or EB virus. Usually, one sees his doctor if symptoms are bothersome, recurrent, or don't go away quickly. Respiratory illnesses in preschoolers are usually viral, but sometimes bacterial. Can give his doctor a call.

Evaluation: It is a positive sign that he does not appear ill. Pain with cough may be related to muscular pain, but after two to three days of fever, please see your pediatrician. Pneumonia should be ruled out. Keep the baby well hydrated and monitor temperature.
