A member asked:

I have genital hsv-1, if the person im with has it orally what are the chances our potential child will have it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Basics: When delivered during the 1st HSV 1 outbreak as many as 30% of infants may develop fatal HSV encephalitis/sepsis. In later pregnancies risk drops below 5% with much less when the outbreaks are controlled. It would be reasonable to approach any pregnancy with a pre-natal consultation with your OB & prospective pediatrician so all will be aware & plan for the safest outcome.
