Usually obvious.: Leg swelling is usually obvious. With trace amounts of edema, you can tell if your socks or shoes leave deeper dents in your skin than usual (tight socks can leave dents in everybody). Compare one leg with another to see if one is bigger than the other (there may always have been a slight difference, but check to see if the difference has increased).

Edema: In cases where edema of the lower extremities isn't very obvious( by pressing on your ankle or foot and observing pitting which lasts a few seconds), measure the circumference of your calves in the morning and at the end of the day to see if there's a significant difference which would indicate presence of edema as the day went on.
