Is there a muscle injury that might cause swelling in lower part of the leg but nothing shows abnormal on mri? does mri always show edema w/ injury?

MRI can tell: as long as the correct "sequences" were performed and the right area was imaged. For instance, a knee MR only includes a small area of the leg. Your pain could be below or above that. One type of sequence looks specifically for fluid in the muscle, and it is very sensitive for muscle strains.
