Sharp pain: If the chest pain is sharp, fleeting, produced by a deep breath, it may be a pinched or irritated intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. This resolves on its own. Tenderness of the area reflects rib cage inflammation or strain. Presence of cough may indicate pleurisy or lung pathology. Avoid straining your rib cage and see your MD if symptoms persist or worsen.
