Doctor can evaluate: A cold caused by cold viruses is usually left alone or self-treated with OTC cold and cough medications. The flu caused by influenza virus is treated by antiviral medication (in some patients). A sore throat can be tested to see if it is strep throat. If strep, antibiotics are needed (if not strep, the sore throat may be due to cold viruses, flu, other causes). Thus, seeing one's doctor may help.

Rule out pneumonia: Pneumonia should be considered and ruled out. An imaging study may be indicated.Drink fluids, monitor temperature and rest. Please see your PCP. Ibuprofen may be used to treat fever.
