Toprol: Beta blockers like toprol, lower blood pressure by slowing the heart rate and reducing the force of heart muscle contraction. I don't advocate using them as first line blood pressure meds unless you have a fast pulse or history of coronary artery disease. They cause fatigue. Ask your MD if he/she will prescribe an ACE inhibitor like lisinopril or calcium channel blocker like amlodopine. Are better
