A member asked:

How can you tell difference between heart palpitation and arrhythmia? occasionally get fluttering heartbeat, not necessarily related to stress or exercise. has happened through adult life, only lasts for seconds at a time. feels scary, but goes away.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hard to guess: An adult in his 30's who feels palpitations should be checked by his primary care doctor (family medicine or internal medicine) to make sure his body is ok from a general check-up point of view, and to listen to his heart. It could be a thyroid hormone problem, or could be that his heart is beating irregularly for another reason, etc... Additionally, a cardiologist can also evaluate.
