A member asked:

My baby is 1 week old and she is passing hard stools and often cries as she passes stool. she is on formula as i struggle to breastfeed. is this normal? can i use milk of magnesia to relieve her of constipation?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Doctor will examine: Babies at a week should have yellowish poops with the thickness of mustard or thick spaghetti sauce. Breastfeeding babies can have even looser poops. Formula-fed babies have firmer poops, but poop that holds shape would be too firm for the first 3-4 months of life. Her pediatrician can examine and hopefully "unplug" her rectum of firm poop, and give helpful advice.
