Fevers are common: A baby or toddler with a new fever usually has some type of infection. Sometimes viral and bacterial germs can cause fevers. Viral infections usually go away on their own. Bacterial infections, such as of the throat, ears, or urinary bladder, need a doctor to diagnose and prescribe antibiotics. If an unusual fever, his doctor may also look for some more rare or more serious conditions.
