A member asked:

Can you let me know is irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease the same thing?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No. Just similar: Sounding names. Ibs is a functional disorder that causes pain and motility problems such as diarrhea or constipation. Treatment is largely symptomatic. Ibd is an inflammatory disorder of unknown cause, such as crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. This is a much more serious condition when you get it, and treatment could require anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, and surgery.
