Can scarring in the diaphragm be mistaken for scarring in the left lung base. i had a chest xray that showed minimal scarring in left lung base, but wasn't mentioned in chest xray 6 months prior. i have a history of gerd/gastritis. former smoker.

Its likely not new: In a 40 year old with history of smoking and GERD, this is probably not new. The radiologist reading the older film probably didn't comment on it. However, it is possible you didn't take as big a breath on the second film and what they are seeing is atelectasis (incomplete inflation). Scaring of diaphragm would be unusual and not confused with lung scaring. Perhaps a radiologist will chime in here
