Both: Migraine headaches and other similar conditions related to migraines do seem to run in families, so there is likely a genetic component. However, we also see people start getting migraines even without any family history of migraines. There are many treatments for migraines, so one's primary care doctor or neurologist can usually prevent or treat migraines.
