Spreading germs: Using the restroom is one common way to get bacteria on hands that would be better not to spread around or get in our own system again . Washing your hands before touching anything that will go into your mouth is also a really good choice . Washing your hands regularly throughout the day is the best way to avoid picking up the viruses that tend top get passed around. Best Wishes

Common sense: If infected or carrying certain intestinal or skin infections, you could put others at risk by shaking hands, preparing food, etc. Also, you might have contacted other toilet users' germs on urinals, flush handles, etc. Actual infections are uncommon, but why take chances? It's also simple courtesy and esthetics: if you shake hands, you'd want to know you't not contacting their urine or feces?
