Throat swab: Your urgent care center or physician may further evaluate with a throat swab to identify Strep bacterial infection. Monitor for and treat fever.

Strep thr. is common: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus, influenza (Tamiflu may be needed), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the throat symptoms are bothersome, persistent, or otherwise worrying the patient. To check for strep, the doctor can do a rapid throat swab with 5-minute results.
