Thorax is the chest: A person in her mid 50's with chest pain needs a doctor's evaluation, usually at the ER, to rule out a heart attack. Depending on age and other risk factors, a heart attack can be less likely or more likely. Since a patient usually can't tell if it's her heart, she gets evaluated at the ER just to be on the safe side. Lung, spine, spinal nerve, and rib cage problems can cause thorax pain too.
