Pleural effusion: Postpericardiotomy syndrome is an immune response after open heart surgery and can take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks after the surgery to develop. Usually the patient will have associated pericardial or pleuritic type pain as well as possible pneumonia and chest xray abnormalities. It is not a silent process.
