" Tonsillitis: Since tonsillitis can be caused by a strep infection I recommend that you obtain a rapid throat culture to check for strep which would require a course of antibiotics. A negative culture favors a viral infection which resolves without antibiotics after several days. Treatment is rest, drinking adequate fluids, gargling with warm salt water, lozenges and Tylenol as needed,.
