Discuss with doctor: People should not take anti-anxiety medication for the first time and go to an event. A patient has to figure out for herself how the medication affects various aspects of her life, how the effects relate to the dose and changes in the dose, how fast the effects appear, how long they last, etc... Propranolol and similar drugs do block down heart rate and blood pressure.
