I'm not a fan of beta blockers as first line treatment for hypertension unless one tends to have a rapid resting heart rate, history of coronary artery disease or ischemic stroke. Your reaction to amlodipine was quite unusual. If you were my patient I would start you on an angiotensin receptor blocker like avapro or diovan. Low dose of a longacting diuretic can be added if needed. lab work 2 weeks
