Usually must drain: Assuming it's a skin boil... a person can get her boil treated with a visit to the doctor. Most boils are treated by draining the pus inside. Antibiotics are sometimes, but not always, used after that. For boils that don't look like they are thin enough to lance through the skin, antibiotics may be used to stop the infection... and then a surgeon can remove the non-infected "cyst" at a later time.
