I saw a doctor today, who has put me on cholesterol medication. i'd like to try get my cholesterol down naturally before starting medication. i'm an active 24 year old female. would this be wise?

Yes, very wise: At age 24, there's time to consider lifestyle changes: if overweight, reduce to ideal weight. Become physically active. Eat a balanced diet. If successful in these, your cholesterol may decline. However, there are some kinds of hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol and other blood fats) that are very dangerous even at young age, and must be treated with drugs. Check with doctor if uncertain.

Some basics: The majority of the population with mild cholesterol elevations can improve their numbers with lifestyle & diet changes. However, there are some with a genetic alteration that makes their internal cholesterol "set point" wrong where medication will be required along with diet & lifestyle changes.You need to discuss your specific numbers with your doc to see what your situation requires.
