Can you get profound iron deficiency and mild anemia from being a vegetarian? my gastroenterologist said that my low levels cant be from my diet but i cant imagine how it can affect it. now im being tested for blood cancer. i also have lyme.

Iron deficiency: I agree with your GI doc. There's plenty of iron in several leafy greens, and a balanced vegetarian diet doesn't result in iron deficiency. "Profound" iron deficiency almost always means blood loss. (But with only "mild" anemia, I'm not sure how "profound" your irondeficiency is.) Heavy menstruation combined with a diet too low in iron sometimes is responsible. Keep discussing with your doctor(s).
