Pain, swelling: Apparently there is no known recent injury, but a stress fracture in the foot can still occur and cause pain and swelling of the foot. Another possibility is an acute arthritic swelling of a joint. Gout or other types of arthritis could be present. Consult a podiatrist for evaluation.Appropriate testing including an xray will be ordered. In the meantime elevate the foot and apply cold applications
