Proctologist: In my experience a proctologist is the best specialist to consult for treatment of hemorrhoids. The other specialists don't seem that interested in hemorrhoids and various nonserious rectal problems and there is little follow-up.

Diosmin/bioflavonoid: Bioflavonoids including a specific orange peel extract called Diosmin have been proven in multiple research studies to improve hemorrhoids and are safe to take long-term. Many of my patients have had great success with a supplement called Vein Factors by FutureBiotics which combines flavonoids with herbs like Butcher's Broom and Horsechestnut. Agree with Dr. H: Recalcitrant hemorrhoids may need surgery. Take oral iron and multivitamins to prevent anemia due to loss of blood from hemorrhoids.
