A member asked:

Got stung by a yellowjacket thursday and area is red and swollen. how long does this last or should i go to er. no fever as well. ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Swelling lasts days: Depending on the individual's response to a stinging insect, it is not unusual to have redness and swelling that increases over several days and then may take up to a week or longer to resolve. Cold compresses and elevation are very helpful. Oral antihistamines help to decrease itchiness as scratching and rubbing will tend to prolong swelling and redness.
