A member asked:

Fetal abnormality scans, if gynaecologist advises me to go for a scan as to make sure that what they saw might not be serious what might it be that the dr saw? i am currently 17 weeks pregnant. all blood tests for abnormality has been neg.

Ultrasound ?'s: Ultrasound at "17 weeks" may just be done to ascertain accurate dating of the pregnancy. If your doctor had other ultrasound tests done earlier in your pregnancy, he/she may be checking to see if any questionable findings previously have disappeared, such as choroid plexus cysts, etc..

Some basics: The quality of a given scan depends some on the equipment, some on the technician, some on if the baby cooperates & gets into useful positions and finally on the doc who interprets the study. You would not want to make a decision on a blurry picture & they don't either. Sending you to a center with more advanced equipment & skill is a way to provide better information. It is not always bad news.
