Good exam: Sciatica is one type of back related pain. A good physical exam by Dr to check back & leg motion, reflexes, & strength is very helpful. If there is no weakness or loss or reflexes, then a 1-2 month period of good physical therapy is recommended before ordering an MRI. Ice, heat, anti inflammatory meds, topical agents, TENS units all can possibly help, as well as muscle strengthening exercises
