A dermatologist: One's primary care doctor can refer to a dermatologist, who can examine the old scars to see what can be done. Some techniques include chemical peels to smooth out tiny defects, dermabrasion to sand the skin to become more even, and injecting fillers into some spots. Different dermatologists may use different methods, so it is fine to get opinions from 2 dermatologists.

Seek Experience: An experienced facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist can give you good results. Techniques for addressing severe acne scarring may be simple, or more involved depending on the depth and severity of the scarring. There are many options like peels, laser treatments, dermabrasion, etc. The best choice depends on your situation. Seek a doctor with experience.

Both are good!: Your could ask for referrals within both groups of doctors. A wise approach is to find a doctor with the most experience with this. Look for one who is a board-certified physician and accepts your insurance if possible.

Either: Both are certified to treat acne scars. Find a specialist who performs this routinely.

Either: Go to someone who is trained in surgical and laser procedures to treat acne. Ask to see before and after photos.

Dermatologist: If the patient has not seen a dermatologist, that is my first choice. That medical specialty has a lot of tricks up their sleeves to help work magic on the skin. If good medication and treatment does not help, most dermatologists have a great relationship with the appropriate skin or facial plastic surgeons in their community.

Improve not remove: Here, the experience of the individual physician is much more important than the specialty. There are plastic surgeons who never treat acne scars and there are dermatologists who never treat acne scars. Ask frankly before the appointment if this is an area of interest and expertise for the physician. Very severe scarring is probably best treated by a plastic surgeon. Complete removal is impossible.
