Cardiothoracic: Most are trained in cardiac andthoracic surgery( and a lot of medicine) training for six to ten years depending on program and lab. Board certification traditionally in general surgery before thoracic, but some shorter programs evolving. Can diagnose, treat, operate on heart, lungs, chest wall, esophagus etc. Thoracic means chest.

By definition : A thoracic surgeon treats and diagnoses diseases of the chest. This includes the lungs, esophagus, pericardium, diaphragm and mediastinum. Typically, they have completed a 5-7 year residency in general surgery and a 2-3 year residency in cardiothoracic surgery.
