Board certification traditionally in general surgery before thoracic, but some shorter programs evolving. Can diagnose, treat, operate on heart, lungs, chest wall, esophagus etc. Thoracic means chest.

By definition : A thoracic surgeon treats and diagnoses diseases of the chest. This includes the lungs, esophagus, pericardium, diaphragm and mediastinum. Typically, they have completed a 5-7 year residency in general surgery and a 2-3 year residency in cardiothoracic surgery.
