Blood letting: Polycythemia rubra vera (PRV) is the only medical condition for which blood letting (venesection) is the treatment. It should bring your hemoglobin from a "too high" to a "normal" level. Someone with PRV should not have anemia, which is a "too low" level of hemoglobin. Low Ferritin level is normal in primary PRV – the low level occurs because of increased overproduction of hemoglobin.
