Blood letting: A high ferritin is bad news because it catalyzes free oxygen radicles. They can be compared to sparks jumping out of a fire in the process known as oxidation, or fuel burning to provide cellular energy. The essential treatment is blood letting until the ferritin gets into the normal range, it is the only use of therapeutic blood letting.

Ferritin: Is an acute phase reactant so can also be elevated in infection and inflammation. First step is to repeat in 4-6 weeks. The other issue to discuss is iron loading from transfusion -- has that been part of your anemia treatment?
