Depends somewhat: exactly which joint is affected, your age, work/injury history, prior history of unilateral joint pain or personal/ family history of inflammatory arthritis. At your age my guess is either a recent/ remote trauma, repetitive injury at work, or and inflammatory arthritis in that order. See below: also recommend your doctor be involved in this discussion.
