Monospot: Usually the only test needed to check for Epstein Barr virus (IBV) infection is a Monospot, in persons suspected to have infectious mononucleosis. In people with certain complex medical conditions, other tests (EBV antibody, viral capsid antigen, and others) are necessary, but only with an expert's advice and care. Almost everybody has positive results on these tests, results hard to interpret.
