Swelling: Shin splints typically are associated with pain of the shins. Ankle edema is not a typical symtpom from shin splints.

Edema: Ankle edema warrants an investigation by a physician. Various causes include venous insufficiency, cardiac,kidney and liver disorders, certain medications, low serum albumin states, fluid retention from hormonal irregularities. Avoid added salt, wear compression stockings until seen by MD.
