Some basics: The entrance to the stomach is a weak fold of tissue, not a valve. Caffeine & nicotine keep that entrance from closing well. Acidic drinks, carbonation & spicy foods aggravate the issue. If you lay down after a meal, removing gravity's help, the pressure the stomach makes churning your food can trigger backwash of acid.
