A member asked:

My wife was diagnosed with mumps last week. i didnt have munps as a child. since yesterday i am experiencing pain in testicles which concerns me. can mumps be diagnosed at this stage or do i need to wait?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe/not: Mumps virus can be found in saliva as early as 7 days before glandular swelling. Incubation can be 12-25 days after exposure. Mumps effects the testis in ~1/3 of teen or older men. It would seldom be the only symptom. Diagnosis might be possible from swabs from inside the cheeks. Your exposure may have resulted in infection, but there is no treatment that changes outcome.
