More needed: Would suggest keeping a log for the cough as far as diurnal variation, productive/ non-productive, fever, etc. From review of current meds, detailed history (log) and an exam your physician will be able to come up with a meaningful workup. A variety of conditions may account for your symptom otherwise.

Persistent Cough?: Smoke; no smoke -persistent cough requires a closer look-see. Although a good reason to stop smoking, very wise to make sure there is no post nasal drip, small polyp or allergen that might be causing the problem. Even nervous tics, stress signs can cause irritation.

Is cphen effective for treating persistent cough in my 5year old?

If Dr. is monitoring: Cough and cold medicines are no longer used for younger children (partly due to government recommendations a few years ago). However, a school-aged child with an ongoing relationship with his doctor, who can monitor his progress on cough and cold medicines, may use such medicines. C-phen has a sedating antihistamine (chlorpheniramine), a decongestant (phenylephrine), and a cough suppressant (dm).

Define it: The best first step is to see an allergist. Finding how if and to what you're allergic is the best way to start; simply trying med after med can be frustrating. Your allergist, possibly with the help of an ENT or pulmonary physician, can help figure this out if it turns out that you're truly not allergic.

Probably not in the short term, but that can definitely happen over time. Good luck!

Bronchitis...: Acute bronchitis can result in a cough which lasts for this duration. There can be associated bronchospasm which can cause the cough to increase even when the other symptoms are resolving. Chronic bronchitis, a form of copd, can also cause a long-lasting cough. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment, especially if the cough is worsening.

Hello. : Hello. If your husband has been a smoker, the toxins could have paralysed the cilia that beat bacteria, virus and "junk" out of his lungs, sinuses and nose. Cilia are like motile whips that move things out of the body. If there is less of the tobacco toxin going into his body, the cilia may be motile again and working double time to remove toxins from his body. This could be his body working to detoxify him, now that it is finally able to. He needs to remain hydrated and should drink at least 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water per day, to help expell this material. Take care.
