Depends: This is something to discuss with the kids doc. It could be triggered by post nasal drip from allergies or irritant exposure. It could also be a feature of asthma.

Watch for distress: Coughing by itself is not worrisome. However, for persistent cough lasting greater than several days, or other warning signs such as difficulty breathing/respiratory distress should prompt medical attention.

What is a good home remedy for a sick coughing child?

Honey: If a child is over the age of one, honey may be used for coughs. I recommend buckwheat honey for its taste and texture. It is not carried in all stores. The soothing effect of the honey is useful at bedtime. In older children, i will add some lemon onto the tablespoon. This helps to break up the mucous. This was a good question since the over the counter medication for children is very limited.

Night cough: There are many reasons for night time cough. Perhaps the child is allergic to something in the bedroom and has asthma, or perhaps the child is regurgitating stomach juices into the throat (called gurd). Make an appointment with your doctor to examine the child to find the cause so treatment can be started.

Can you describe how to cure cough in children?

Depends on Cause: Otc cough suppressants for children contain mainly dextromethorphan, a mild cough suppressant. Some studies show honey to be equally/more effective for soothing cough (never give to children <1yo). If caused is posterior nasal drip, consider use of antihistamine. If due to inflammation (wheezing) in lungs, child may benefit from bronchodilator tx (albuterol) and/or steroid therapy.
