Pap Smears & HPV: Pap smears should begin at 21 years, and not before. Abnormal Pap smears are caused by the sexually transmitted HPV virus. HPV vaccination should be given between 8 and 45 years, the sooner the better. Testing for HPV is not recommended until after 30 years since it affects 80% of people but goes away in 90%. Only persistent HPV after 30 is concerning. After 30, testing for HPV on Pap is done.
