Traditionally: Traditionally a 2 dimensional image is taken first. If additional information is required a 3 dimensional exposure is made. That decision is made by the General Dentist, Endodontist, or Oral Surgeon that will be treating you. To work blinds is to guess, not a good choice. Follow your practitioner's recommendation.

CBCT: CBCT is best, by far. But often 2D is all that is necessary.
